GACS Fine Arts Competitions

Several MS/HS students had the opportunity to participate in the state competitions in March 2009. Three of our high school students, Josef Venable, Taylor Pierce, and Timmy Coyle placed first in the state of Georgia in their categories and earned the privilege of competing at the national competitions during the week of April 13th.

Students will be traveling to the national competition on Tuesday, April 14th and Thursday, April 16th.

At the state competitions in March 2009, GACS Executive Director Mike Bryant encouraged participating schools to send students who participated at the state level to the national competition so they could get an idea of the caliber of competition at the national level. The administration has decided to offer several 8th-12th grade CCA students this opportunity. Students who decide to attend will be able to visit the AACS gallery of art entries, observe national competitions in music and speech, and be present at the closing program and awards presentation at Bob Jones University in Greenville on Thursday, April 16th.

On Friday, April 24th, several 4th-6th grade students will compete at the state level in speech, music, and in the spelling bee. This competition will be held at Killian Hill Christian School in Lilburn, GA.

Music Ministry

1

Students in 6th through 12th grades with vocal and instrumental music interests can volunteer to be part of the chapel music ministry team. This team is led by Mr. Charles Lutz, Covenants sixth grade teacher.

Mr. Lutz learned to play the guitar and piano as a middle school student. In high school he led the singing for his church youth group, performed in both school and church talent shows and musicals, played in a band with friends, and started writing original songs. He has written nearly 100 songs since. Mr. Lutz has released four albums. Information about the inspiration for his music and how to order CDs can be found at http://www.chaslutzmusic.com.

2In college, Charles Lutz was a member of a traveling folk group and sang regularly with the worship music team of his church. He has since served as a civilian music director for the Recruit Memorial Chapel at the Great Lakes Naval Training Center in Illinois, and minister of music at Grace Presbyterian Church in Louisiana.
